Clovis made weight!
YaY! yAy! yaY! Clovis, (My Market lamb) finally reached the minimum weight to go to our fair. Now he has ten days for extra weight! :D
I am really happy about that because I can't sell him at the auction if he doesn't weigh enough. Thats what happened last year!
When we weighed the lamb to find that it made weight, Mr. Foust said that I must have done a lot of praying, I sure have!

Getting my first lamb
My friend, Mattie Cobb and I bounced joyously as we rode to the Hanson’s
farm. Mrs. Cobb was driving us to pick up our lambs for our 4-H project for the
summer. It was the first time Mattie and I ever gotten a chance to raise a lamb, so
we were totally excited.

On the way to the farm, where we would get the lambs, we racked our brains for clever names for both of them. As we bumped down the gravel road, we noticed
the road signs trying to be inspired to think of a name. It didn’t seem to work
though, because we never thought of anything that way. Soon we started thinking of
our favorite movie, The Man from Snowy River and thought of the characters. Spur?
Jim? or Clancy? First we needed to know if they were a ewe or ram. We gave up
trying and decided to look at them first. Mattie and I were very happy to be getting
lambs, and on the way there we kept looking at each other and saying, “ We’re
getting lambs!”
Finally, one of us spotted the Hanson’s farm. It was our first time going there
so after reading the instructions to get there we were relived to find the right place.
As we pulled into the driveway we saw our friend, Jenna Hanson riding her horse in
the arena. Then her mom, Mrs. Hanson, came out of the house and took us to the
lamb barn. While we walked over we saw their little fat goat named Yoda. He was
pretty funny! He kept trying to head butt me but he was only about two feet high, so
it looked really funny.

Once we got to the lamb pen, there were ewes and their lambs looking so cute
with each lamb huddled underneath their mothers! Mattie and I got in the pen and
by this time Jenna had joined us. Now was the challenge of catching them so Mattie
and I could pick out the ones we were going to take home with us. Those lambs were
harder to catch then you would think! It was a lot of fun though! Once I caught one,
I tried to remember all the characteristics I was looking for in a market lamb. A
long, straight back, large enough to make weight at the fair, not knock-kneed,
healthy, and muscular. Right away one of the lambs caught my eye, it was one of the
larger lambs. It was inky black with one thin, white stripe on its head. After closely
examining the muscling, I decided that she was the right one. Meanwhile, Mattie
had picked one out too. They were both from the same ram. Soon, after playing
with the lambs for a while we all went to the house and ate supper. After supper we
paid for our lambs then went back to the barn. Mrs. Hanson gave us enough feed to
last us until we could get more and we loaded up the two lambs. Mrs. Cobb let us sit
in the back of the mini van with them.

Soon we were on our way to go pick up Mattie’s older sister, Sarah who was
at a meeting. When we arrived to pick her up, some of our friends were at the
meeting and we got our lambs out to show them. After we showed them off to
everybody, we got them back in the car and tried to think of good name for “our
little girls”. We went to the Taco Bell drive through for Sarah to get some supper
and as we were pulling out, Sarah said, “I know, Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane!”
and it stuck. Mine was Annie and Mattie’s was Jane (for short).

I know I will never forget that ride to pick up my lamb and I will always look
on it fondly. As we pulled in the Cobb’s driveway, Mattie and I looked at each other
and at the same time smiled said, “We got lambs!”
